Question by Caetaneada: how to dress to a job interview in the winter?
Hi all
Have a job interview during this cold month, I will be travelling from the North to the South of England so I will be 3 hours and 30 minutes at cold train stations, I usually wear black suit and pants with a white blouse or shirt but as time gets colder and colder I am a bit scared that I will be too cold, is it ok to wear gloves, scarfs and hats? if so, what type and colour? I have a white cotton wool scarf and matching gloves that I love wearing, do you think this would be a good idea? thanks

Hi, i don’t think you can go wrong with a crisp trouser suit or pencil skirt with knee high boots and groovy tights shows you’ve got some character. Try and get a white or cream polo jumper to go under your suit jacket – it will keep you warm and look great! A nice winter coat and leather gloves look professional with a scarf. Good luck x

I think your idea is a good one. You didn’t mention the type of job interview, so I wouldn’t be dogmatic about it, but for most business interviews, a black suit is ideal. If you have white gloves and scarf, you will surely need them. I wouldn’t do the hat because of ‘hat hair’. The best would be a heavy coat with a hood. You could still wear the scarf and gloves and will probably need them. You should probably better spend your preparation time learning about the company balance sheet before you go. It can tell you a lot about the likelihood of keeping your job should you be hired.
Good luck on your interview.
Yes, it sounds nice. Don’t you have a coat in neutral color or navy, brown or beige. Black (the color of your suit) goes with any other colors in combination. Stay warm during the travel. It will be warm at the place of interview.
I think you might even want to wear two pairs of pants when it’s cold. You don’t want to catch a chill.
sounds good but get a proper coat, for pure example cause i dunno what you look like, this:

that with your dark trousers, blouse, scarf and gloves would look great and keep you warm, plus for train journeys a coat like that is less likely to crease as much as a suit jacket does.
duffle coats are in.
Don’t forget that it will probably get slightly warmer as you go down south!!! (I used to come up north to see family when I worked in the south, and had to add layers as the train journey progressed!!)
If your scarf and gloves are worn a lot, give them a wash the day before so that they look clean (white really shows the dirt). Sometimes, it can be nice to have something comfy and favourite to wear – i think they’ll be fine. You can always take them off before you enter the building if you’re not totally confident.
If your interview is in a major town / city, it might be worth calling the train station you’re travelling to. They might have a left luggage section or lockers. It might cost a pound or two, but you could possibly wear a jumper for the journey and change in the station loo. That way you won’t get crumpled on the journey (otherwise, make sure you wear a blouse that won’t crumple).
Wear good thick tights – if it’s a trouser suit, no-one will see them!
Good luck with the interview!
You would exactly the same for a Winter Interview as you would for a Summer Interview.
Taking Hats, Scarves and Coats into an interview is the fastest way of losing a job.
I agree with laura r, ring the station to check if there are lockers! You’ll need to refresh after 31/2 hours anyway!
skirt suits are more professional looking and worn with nice knee high boots are very stylish too! The coat, scarf, gloves etc, it’s winter – Of course you need to stay warm! Everyone wraps up at this time year and you are no exception, white gloves hat and scarf look great.
Be comfortable on the train, refresh at the station, have a strong mint to clear your passages (cold, runny noses are not attractive!) and you’ll do fine.. good luck! x
